syd mead/blade runner homage

This is some cover art for the new issue of ImagineFX magazine. I was asked to create some artwork paying homage to the movie Blade Runner and to the design work of Syd Mead. I also put together a step-by-step walkthrough along with the original layered Photoshop file on the included DVD. In case you're wondering about the curious composition and blank spaces, they are the areas that will be covered or obscured by text and logos on the magazine cover.

I wish I had had a little more time to put into it, but I had about a week's time in which I was also trying to knock down a few other deadlines. Woulda coulda shoulda.

Anyway I hope you like it!

Hi there

As the title says I am not actually dead, as my last post date of February might have you believe. I have been doing a lot of work for the regular cast of clients, and most of it I can't show until later.

I do have something I wanted to mention - I've been working on this project for over a year now, and it will be available later this year, in October. It's a sort of how-to book on designing and illustrating fantasy characters. The publisher, David & Charles, saw some of the material I had been contributing to ImagineFX magazine and they contacted me about putting together a book. This is the first of a set of books.

Trying something out - I did the intial rough/layout art in Photoshop, then printed it out very light on to a piece of comic book board. Then I went over it with pens and markers and white gel pen, then scanned the board back into Photoshop. In Photoshop I overlaid some grunge and stone textures. A few extra steps but there's some nice analog noise action that gets added in. Lemme know what you all think...

One of my favorite online retailers is jetpens.com - they carry a lot of art/illustration oriented drawing supplies, including the pencils shown below that I use a lot. I just received the green gel mechanical pencil, with its very squishy and comfortable grip. The other two pencils on the right I just bought for their sheer gadgeto-fetishistic design quality. The larger one is actually weighted a little funny for drawing (at least for me, but then again I'm kind of a princess), but the smaller one on the far left is pretty comfy.

Anyway, very highly recommended.

Hey there - sorry for the lack of updates lately. I have been slammed with work, which I know I often complain about (but which I should be thankful for, because as a freelancer that's the preferable spot to be in!).

A while back some of the concept design work I had done while at High Moon Studios got some nice recognition from the Society of Illustrators in LA for Visual Development: http://www.si-la.org/45/visual.html. I always hate tooting my own horn but I thought I would share. One thing I've discovered as a freelancer is that you do in fact need to toot your own horn if you want to keep working.

Hello -

This is a slight re-working of a piece I did a couple of years ago called Drow of Praxirek, for Wizards of the Coast. The original can be found on my site. There aren't really any drastic changes; the main issue I had was with the main (seated) character's face. I darkened the skin on a few of the elves, since their skin is often described as glossy black or purple, and I wanted to try to get more of a sense of that in the image.

Linda and I were gone for a week in Tulum, where we were attending a week long yoga workshop organized by our yoga teacher Dana Rae Paré. It was a great experience, three yoga classes each day, excellent food, beautiful beach, and the leisurely pace allowed me some time to just sit on the beach and draw. So great to do that, and something I haven't had time to do in years. I actually drew this one palm tree several times, concentrating on different aspects each time. I gave away a couple of the sketches, but these are pretty representative.

Pardon the forthcoming mental diarrhea.

One of the things I've always tried to do with concept design work is to provide as clear a read as possible. To me, this has meant eliminating extra (unnecessary) information, clarifying the intent of the design as much as possible, with the idea that the main purpose is to guide someone else in creating a 3D asset. In that kind of mind set, the concept art is not the end, but simply one step along the way to the end. It's a documentation of the desired end product, but it is not the product itself.

Illustration is a different kind of thing. As the one holding the pencil (or brush, stylus, whatever your deal is), that thing you're creating is the end product. That being the case, a clear, efficient read isn't necessarily always a requirement. Meaning, you're no longer writing a visual instruction manual for someone else to build something.

Good art seems to be about being different things to different people - depending on what's going on inside your head, what you get emotionally from a piece of art will be different from what the person next to you gets out of it. I've always tried to maximize the "signal to noise" ratio in my concept art. See that stuff about "clear read" above. In illustration, it may be that "noise" can be made into "signal." By having many layers, textures, noise - there are more opportunities for meaning to arise from the art. Not necessarily "meaning" in terms of what the artist intended, but that might come from the act of a viewer looking at a piece of art and responding emotionally to patterns, lines or forms in ways that only that particular person can.

In the past I've made the comparison between concept artists and actors. Some concept artists approach their work similarly to good character actors. They are able to suppress their own voice in order to play a role that best supports the project they are working on, and you are never really conscious of CONCEPT ART. Same way that really good visual effects are not obvious, or how a lot of times it's difficult to remember the names of those good character actors. These concept artists are able to design appropriately for any time period, genre, mood, etc. Other concept artists are more like blockbuster movie stars. They do a certain thing really well, are well known for it and are hired to do that thing on someone's project. As in movies, there's definitely a market for those guys too.

As a concept artist, I've always strived for the character actor route, which means I've always attempted to eliminate any individual mannerisms or idiosyncracies in my art as much as possible, in pursuit of that "clear read," and to serve the project. Of course, as much as you try you'll never completely eliminate those personal artistic twitches. As an illustrator, I want to figure out exactly what those things are, and bring them back and refine them in my illustration work.

So all that verbiage was meant to set up this image, which is a remix of a digitally painted sketch from several months ago. My formative years as an artist (starting from say age two to about age 28) were spent with pencil and paper, and I think that a good portion of my artistic "voice" comes from that pencil, paper and linework equation.

This guy stands about 8 feet tall, and is mostly mechanical. Red is the signature color for the Galactic Imperium; for basic grunts like this guy, red will be a major element in the design. For higher ups like Uvei Mortis, red will play a much more subtle role in the visual design. For scientists and middle management types like Fentonov, the red will be more of a 50-50 design element.

Oh yeah, and this is obviously a revised/refined version of the sketch I posted of this guy a while back.

This is a sort of test of the look and feel of this space opera comic book project. By the way, to answer the question that some of you had about the previous post, my intention is to make another comic book short story, except hopefully this one will be good. I decided that in order to pull that off, I probably really ought to bring in someone who actually knows how to write an interesting story and characters. So ideally, between the writer and me we can come up with a cool, exciting story with some decent visuals to go along with it.

Anyway, at the moment we are still in the early stages of character development. I have some ideas and general things I'd like to see, but the ball is pretty much in Stephen's court. My focus at the moment is to refine the look and feel of both the universe and the actual graphic style of story. I've been trying a few different tricks with the previous posts, and I think I'm starting to narrow in on a particular look for this book. It's a combination of drawing and painting styles mixed with a few digital filter and layer tricks.

Hello again, sorry for the absence - had quite a bit on my plate there for a few weeks. Still do really, but I wanted to put at least a few minutes into this space opera project. I've been working with a writer named Stephen Phillips, who is doing a great job with helping me establish the world and the main characters. I think his ideas and script writing ability will help this thing out a lot!

Anyway this is just a set of really really quick and dirty sketches, starting to create the characters of the ships in this story. What I'd like to do is give the ship designs a bit of that old school, "practical model" feel. There is a certain aesthetic that comes from having to build actual models for the science fiction movies of the 70s and 80s that you don't always see in the cg models in movies nowadays. The way I interpret that is that the ships start off with some very simple geometric shapes, which create an easily identifiable silhouette - you can immediately recognize a TIE fighter, for instance, regardless of the angle at which you are looking at it. All the "greeblies" are applied as a secondary layer, rather than acting as the main idea of the design.

So for this guy, I was thinking about a rotating cockpit, so that the orientation of the ship could change on the fly. So to speak... it would land and take off in a horizontal orientation, kind of like the old Cylon raiders from the original Battlestar Galactica TV series. Once in the air, or in space, the cockpit could rotate around 90 degrees and the ship would then take on a vertical orientation. No practical reason, just kind of a cool look. And so I wouldn't be dinged for doing a Cylon raider ripoff. Which it still sort of is I guess...

Yadda yadda.

Here's another quick character study. More like a character type rather than a specific character. I was interested in doing a Flash Gordon kinda guy, except not so blatantly Caucasian. Hi there. Still pretty jazzed on this Art Rage program. It's pretty interesting to see how the paint behaves here - from what my experienced traditional painting friends have said, it's a fairly good model of how real paint works . Kind of a wake up call as to how easy it is to get the color you are after in Photoshop. On the other hand, in Photoshop you don't seem to get those accidental color shifts and specks that this "real paint" stuff does....

Here is a sketch done quickly in Art Rage using the pencil tool and colored in Photoshop. Not really a concept design for anything... I really like the way the pencils and paint feel in this program.

And starting to think about a new short story for the next possible anthology project...

No comment really at this time, other than that I think I want to have a more solid, plot oriented story this time.

Here are a couple of old sketches done in pencil and watercolor; these two were really early concepts for characters inhabiting the world in which this ashcan/short story takes place. The top sketch shows one incarnation of Somerset Free, the main character. The lower image is a character named Beethoven Five, a professional racer and "artifical personality construct."
